Heat Action Day 2025: Age(ing) in a changing climate

Today is Heat Action Day - an occasion to draw attention to the health risks of heat, especially for older people. Yet it must not stop there.

An article by Martina Brandt and Grit Höppner (‘Sustainable age(ing) in the context of climate change’) makes this clear:

  • Research often focuses on older people as a vulnerable group that needs to be protected from climate risks.
  • Far too rarely is the question asked: What active roles can older people play in climate protection?
  • In this way, the focus is shifted beyond the need for pure reaction to the opportunities for older people to shape and participate in the context of sustainability.

Climate change is a collective challenge. Ageing research can and should broaden its perspective - and take older people seriously as active co-creators of a climate-friendly future.
