New study sheds light on gender roles and care systems in Europe
Alina Schmitz and Martina Brandt, together with Michal Levinsky, Melanie Wagner and Ella Cohn-Schwartz, present a new index to measure social integration among older adults in Europe and examine the role of gender and care regimes.
Key findings of the study:
- Older women tend to be less socially integrated than men.
- In family-oriented care regimes, older adults are often less socially integrated.
- Gender differences are also more pronounced in these countries: Women in family-centered regimes are often less integrated due to their role as primary caregivers.
These findings are crucial for the development of context-sensitive policies that promote social integration - especially among women and older adults in family-centered care regimes.
