The tandem project: Intergenerational Support and Waithood
As part of his fellowship, Imran Sabir is working with Martina Brandt on the tandem project “Intergenerational Support and Waithood”. This project explores the dynamics of intergenerational support through the concept of 'waithood' - a prolonged period of dependency experienced by young adults during delayed transitions to adulthood. Using a comparative approach, the youth-oriented society of Pakistan and the ageing society of Germany will be analyzed to understand how cultural norms, economic structures and family configurations shape patterns of support.
The project combines institutional analysis with empirical data from interviews and surveys with young adults and their parents. The aim is to decipher the areas of tension and adaptation strategies of families under economic pressure and social change. The results should not only enrich theoretical debates, but also provide concrete political recommendations for action.
The Fellowship Program of the UARuhr College
