Intergenerational support in times of corona

We are very happy to share the new article of our chair published in the “Journal of Intergenerational Relationships”: “Distancing and Changes in Intergenerational Support in Germany During the Beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

What the study shows:

  • Almost 70% of all grandparents have stopped childcare during the lockdown.
  • Around a third of adult children have reduced the support they give their parents.
  • Women and those working part-time were most likely to continue providing help.
  • Those who withdrew support were more likely to report unresolved care needs and problems.

The results clearly show the unintended side effects that protective measures can have on family cohesion - a valuable basis for future crisis strategies.
