Dr. Alina Schmitz, together with Thorben Frie, Institute for Social Research and Social Policy - ISG, and Ferzaneh Fakdani, University of Cologne, has published the chapter “Ageing in structural change: On the health situation of older people in the Ruhr region” in the anthology StadtGesundheit im Ruhrgebiet I - Bestandsaufnahmen und Perspektiven. The volume is dedicated to the health challenges and developments in one of Europe's largest conurbations.

The chapter provides a detailed insight into the health situation of the older population in the Ruhr region. In view of demographic ageing, which is particularly advanced in this region, the article focuses on the complex interactions between health and social situation. The Ruhr region, a historical center of attraction for people of different origins, is seen here as a “laboratory” - a region that anticipates key challenges that are also expected in other parts of Germany.

With over five million inhabitants, the Ruhr region faces significant health and social issues, which are further exacerbated by an ageing population and increasing pressures on healthcare. The book chapter takes up central concepts of social science health research and sheds light on how historical and structural conditions affect the health situation of older people.

The book has been available since November 5, 2024 and comprises 304 pages. A digital version can be downloaded here.
