While there is growing awareness of sexual and gender diversity in later life, there is still a lack of reliable data and quantitative research specifically for older LGBT* people in Germany.

A new article by Robert Heidemann, Lisa de Vries, Zaza Zindel, and Ralf Lottmann examines why historical stigmatization still has an impact today, what insights international research provides, and what potential, but also limitations, existing secondary data sets have for better understanding the living situations of older LGBT* people.

The article was published in the special issue “Sociology of Age and Ageing: Theoretical and Empirical Challenges (Re-)Visited” and is freely accessible here: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11577-025-01031-y
