Author(s): Ella Cohn-Schwartz, Sigal Gooldin, Lian Meiry, Robert Heidemann & Yaacov G. Bachner
What the study shows:
- On average, older LGBTQ+ people have 5 people in their “family of choice” and 4 close family of origin members.
- Relationships with the family of origin tend to be more stable, but families of choice are perceived as more committed, more accepting and less conflictual.
- Better mental health is associated with a higher number of people in the family of origin and family of choice, a relationship based on partnership and a positive assessment of the family of choice.
