In their joint study, Frank Micheel (Federal Institute for Population Research), Alina Schmitz, and Martina Brandt examine volunteer engagement and latent interest in volunteering during the second half of life.

The key findings of the study, based on DEAS data:
While older men have a higher actual rate of volunteer participation, women show a significantly higher interest in volunteering.
Informal care work, particularly caring for grandchildren, often represents a structural barrier for women that hinders the transition from interest to active volunteer work.
In contrast, a lower time commitment to caregiving (up to ten hours per week) is positively associated with volunteer work among women.
