Shaping Fair and Viable Intergenerational Policies for the Future

Funding: European Union (Horizon Europe)
Coordination: SGH Warsaw School of Economics (Prof. Agnieszka Chłoń-Domińczak)
Consortium: 13 European partner institutions
About the Project
Demographic change, a shrinking workforce, and multiple global transformations pose unprecedented challenges to the European “intergenerational contract.” The FAIRGENs project, funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe research framework program, addresses the central question for the future: How can fair, sustainable, and forward-looking intergenerational policies be designed in Europe?
Together with partners from 13 European institutions, the consortium is developing scientifically sound, empirical foundations as well as a concrete European Policy Action Plan to support policymakers in shaping a future that is fair to all generations.
Our Role in the Project
The team from TU Dortmund University plays a key role in two core research areas of the project:
Leadership of Work Package 7: “Intergenerational Care and Well-Being across Europe”
The focus is on analyzing informal care and support provided across generations. This is based on harmonized longitudinal data (including data from the European SHARE survey —Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe).
Participation in Work Package: “Perception of Intergenerational Fairness through the Lens of Citizens’ Rights and Democracy”
Together with partner institutions from Poland, Sweden, and Italy, we are investigating conceptions and perceptions of intergenerational justice in this work package. Using a variety of primary data collection methods, we reconstruct these perspectives in order to analyze them in a cross-national comparison and in relation to existing theoretical concepts.
